Haystack & grain fire policies are not part of the Federal Crop Insurance Program and are provided directly to farmers by private insurers.  

Many farmers purchase this coverage because its perils are more broad than a traditional farm insurance coverage.  

Farmers often purchase a grain fire policy just before harvest when fields are susceptible to fire damage.  The policy can be purchased at any time during the growing season.
